Pilots aim to raise HK$1 million for local children in 'Asia Miles Subic2Hebe Charity Challenge'

READY TO ROW: Captain John Graham and Captain Stu Pryke aim to raise up to HK$1 million for a local charity by rowing more than 1,000 kilometres in the "Asia Miles Subic2Hebe Charity Challenge".

Asia Miles, Asia's leading travel reward programme, is proud to be the title sponsor for a unique endeavour, which hopes to raise up to HK$1 million for handicapped children in Hong Kong.

On 4 May, two Cathay Pacific Pilots - Captain Stu Pryke and Captain John Graham - will begin an epic journey, rowing in a small boat from the Philippines to Hong Kong in the "Asia Miles Subic2Hebe Charity Challenge". The marathon trip, from Subic Bay to the Hebe Haven resort in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, will cover more than 1,000 kilometres of ocean and is expected to take 16 days to complete.

As title sponsor for the Charity Challenge, Asia Miles is accepting donations in the form of Asia Miles through the Asia Miles website - www.asiamiles.com/en/ (under About Asia Miles > Latest News). Cash donations can also be made at the website set up by the pilot rowers - www.subic2hebechallenge.com.

All proceeds from the Charity Challenge will go to the Sunnyside Club - a Hong Kong charity for handicapped children set up and run by volunteers from Cathay Pacific. A portion of the money raised will be spent on providing cardiac care for youngsters.

General Manager Cathay Pacific Loyalty Programmes Dominic Purvis said: "Asia Miles is very happy to sponsor this worthy activity, which will help put smiles on the faces of young Hong Kong people supported by the Sunnyside Club. We wish Stu and John well in their remarkable endeavour, and we encourage people to contribute either Asia Miles or cash to help in their fundraising efforts."

This is the first time the journey has been undertaken in a boat and Captains Pryke and Graham will be crossing the South China Sea in a self-righting 24-foot Woodvale Challenge rowing boat made from plywood. During their trip the pilots will be collecting data on the state of the ocean’s flora and fauna for WWF Hong Kong, as well as reporting on dumping and ocean abuse.

Captain Stu Pryke said: "We have both crossed this ocean many times by air but covering the route in a boat is a whole new challenge. We have both been working hard to prepare for the trip and we are pleased to be able to help the Sunnyside Club through our efforts. Our sincere thanks go to Asia Miles for their excellent support, and to all our other sponsors - including Cathay Pacific Cargo - for helping to make the Charity Challenge become a reality."
